Musik-Akademie Basel

Founded in 1867, the Musik-Akademie Basel has been a centre of excellence in music education for over 150 years. Situated in the heart of the city of Basel, it offers an international campus for teaching, research, and further education in various music genres, ranging from early and classical to contemporary music. Its history is characterized by pioneering private initiatives and the political will to sustain public education in music, which originate in the humanistic and cultural tradition of Basel. Besides the Basel Hochschule für Musik and the Music school for young musicians, the Musik-Akademie comprises the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, one of the most renowned centres for education and research in early music. The Musik-Akademie is furthermore known for its excellent programs in chamber music and electronic music, and in 2014 launched the Jazz campus which features its own club and specially designed sound rooms. Over the years, important guitarists, like Walter Feybli, Oscar Ghiglia, Fred Frith and Konrad Ragossnig and famous lute players and teachers like Hopkinson Smith, Eugène Dombois, Antony Rooley and Crawford Young have taught at the Basel Hochschule für Musik. Today it hosts several prominent guitarists, such as Pablo Marquez, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Yaron Deutsch, Lionel Loueke, Stephan Schmidt and lute players like Julian Behr, Marc Lewon and Peter Croton .The Musik-Akademie promotes innovative projects and regularly collaborates with partners like the city’s orchestra and theTheater Basel as well as research institutions in Switzerland and abroad. With its own concerts, symposia, masterclasses, and the prestigious Vera Oeri Library, the Musik-Akademie contributes to the vibrant and thriving cultural life of Basel.
