Right from its first edition, the International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini has envisioned to become more than a competition by including concerts, lectures/encounters with composers, Masterclasses, and presentations of instrument collections among its events. Our aim is to offer plenty of opportunities to spend time together so that competitors can get to know each other and the Jury members, exchange experiences, learn and be inspired. In fact, participants are always encouraged to stay for the whole competition period and to take part in the various musical and social happenings.
It has become tradition by now that for each of its editions the cciMB commissions a composer, usually connected with the hosting Conservatory or city, to write a piece that will be premiered during the competition, either in the semifinal or final round. Compositions commissioned so far include: Melancholic Dance by Alberto Martelli (2011), Divergence de la série harmonique by Yair Klartag (2013), Imbricatta by Sergio Assad (2015), and Cantar de mio Cid by Jean-Dominique Krynen (2017).
As true guitar festival, each edition features several concerts, from the opening concert, and performances by Jury members and winners of previous editions to the final round, which usually includes a Concerto with orchestra, a unique opportunity for young guitarists to test their ability to play together in ensembles. For the cciMB 2018, participants will have a choice between Concierto del Sur by M.M. Ponce or Concerto No.1 in Re Op.99 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The finalist will be accompanied by the CRR Orchestra directed by Xavier Delette, Director of the CRR.
